I’ve seen this more and more. Last year a problem arose with Lord of the Flies. Long story, but my principal called me in as department head and asked if I were familiar with the book. I was amazed that he wasn’t. I have posted in my room the 100 greatest literary works and I reference it frequently. Sadly, I’m too busy teaching to read myself. Give me SSR any day.

As a parent, I can't tell you how many of my friends allow their children to listen to books on tape in place of actually reading the books. The really scary thing is they don't see the problem. I'm not an English teacher, but an avid reader and it just breaks my heart. I tell young parents just starting their families–want to have a smart kid? Read, read, read and then when they're able require them to read, read, read.
